JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A 4-year-old accidentally shot his 14-month old brother but authorities say the child survived.

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey tells The Clarion-Ledger (https://on.thec-l.com/2k0tz5W ) the shooting happened Tuesday night in a neighborhood near the Ross Barnett Reservoir.

Bailey says the children’s father was watching television and their mother was working on a project when they noticed the children had gotten quiet. The father got up to check on them and went to the bedroom where he found the gun safe open and the 14-month-old on the ground with a gunshot wound.

Bailey says the father told investigators the gun safe door had been closed but was not secured, and the 4-year-old accessed a loaded .45 caliber pistol.

No charges have been filed, and the family’s name has not been released.
