DETROIT (AP) - About 2,000 winter jackets are being given to homeless and parentless children in Michigan as part of the UAW-Ford Jackets for Joy initiative.

UAW-Ford Vice President Jimmy Settles says the organization “felt it was most important to help stand in the gap for youth” that “are without their parents during this holiday season.”

The UAW-Ford is a collaboration between United Auto Workers members and Dearborn-based Ford Motor Co.

More than two dozen Detroit-area nonprofits are receiving the jackets for distribution. The final distribution is scheduled Dec. 16 in partnership with the Angel Tree Network, which will give jackets to children whose parents are incarcerated.

Another 3,000 winter jackets also will be given away in other parts of the country.
