AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - The president of Auburn University is launching a program to provide $5 million to a research initiative.
Auburn President Steven Leath will launch the Presidential Awards for Interdisciplinary Research, funded through his office, to provide money for the school’s research endeavors over the next three years, the Opelika-Auburn News reported . The program is similar to the one Leath implemented while president at Iowa State in 2013.
The awards will be announced next year.
“Auburn also has a lot of health sciences expertise, as well as expertise in cybersecurity, autonomous vehicle research, the performing arts and humanities, and other key areas,” Leath said. “I’m confident we’ll see a number of teams coming forward, ready to connect with industry and government partners that can benefit from Auburn expertise.”
PAIR would focus on largely health science and food security, Leath said. He said the program will help expand Auburn’s research partnerships and create new jobs.
“Interdisciplinary research linked to real-world challenges provides an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience that prepares them to contribute meaningfully to the economy from day one,” he said.
Leath, who was hired this year, hopes the program will attract researchers who can make an impact.
“Auburn has a three-part mission of teaching, outreach and research,” Leath said. “The research component leads to new discoveries that enrich the education we provide to students and the outreach we extend to those who want and need it. Auburn research provides solutions to real-world problems.”
