COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The Latest on winter weather in South Carolina (all times local):

4:25 p.m.

Authorities say snow falling across northern South Carolina is snarling traffic and led to a number of schools closing early.

The National Weather Service says 1 to 2 inches (2 to 5 centimeters) of snow has been reported along and north of Interstate 85 from Greenville to Spartanburg on Friday with 3 inches of snow (8 centimeters) reported at Mountain Rest in Oconee County.

Schools in Oconee, Pickens and Greenville counties all closed early as they snow started falling earlier and heavier than expected.

The weather service has now placed South Carolina’s mountains under a winter storm warning, with the counties along I-85 over to York County under a winter weather advisory.

Traffic was slowing down, but no serious wrecks or power outages have been reported

Some winter weather is possible this weekend in northwestern South Carolina.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the South Carolina mountains.

The National Weather Service office in Greer said 2 to 4 inches of snow is possible in the mountains of Oconee, Pickens and Greenville counties through 7 a.m. Saturday.

Rain mixed with snow is possible in Anderson, Cherokee, Chester, Greenville, Laurens, Oconee, Pickens, Spartanburg and York counties late Friday. Up to 1 inch of snow is possible north and west of Interstate 85.

The weather service also says there is a possibility of snow and rain late Friday and early Saturday in Chesterfield, Fairfield, Lancaster and Newberry counties. Little accumulation is expected.
