ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) - A runway at Detroit Metropolitan Airport that dates back nearly seven decades is set for a major overhaul.

The Detroit News reports airport officials hosted an informational meeting Thursday in Taylor for area residents and others about the reconstruction of runway 3L-21R and its taxiways. The estimated $240 million project is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2019 and wrap up by winter 2020.

Theresa Samosiuk, senior project manager with the airport authority, says the runway, which is near the McNamara and North terminals at the airport in Romulus, will be closed between spring and fall of 2019. The runway was constructed in around 1950.

Samosiuk says the construction shouldn’t cause difficulties for airport travelers, noting that: “If there are impacts, they will be minimal.”
