BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Court records show an independent candidate for mayor of Burlington has a criminal record connected to cocaine distribution in the 1990s.

Infinite Cucleasure acknowledges having a criminal record on his campaign website, but does not provide any details. Records show he served two stints in prison for conspiracy to distribute cocaine charges in New York and Pennsylvania.

In a statement Thursday night, Culcleasure focused on his story as a reflection of the problems facing people of color and those without privilege and of the importance of change, noting that Vermont allowed him to vote after his convictions.

The renewed focus on his record follows a Vermont Progressive Party caucus Wednesday night in Burlington in which attendees endorsed Carina Driscoll in the race for mayor against incumbent Democratic Mayor Miro Weinberger.
