PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The company that operates the Rhode Island lottery will provide $2.6 million in services to the state and pay $80,000 in fines for falling below an employee mark stipulated in its contract.
IGT, formerly known as GTech, promised to employ 1,000 people every year for 20 years, and, in exchange, received an exclusive contract to run the lottery.
The Providence Journal reports that the company has received complaints from state officials that it has fallen short of those employment requirements at least five times.
IGT says it believes differences in the way the state is now counting employees was responsible for the worker shortfall.
Talks between the sides led to an amended contract in May 2016 that will provide the state additional services and fines to settle the matter.
