EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - The Indiana Supreme Court has ordered a new sentence for an Evansville man who faced life without parole in a teenage boy’s killing.
Tuesday’s 3-2 ruling means a Vanderburgh County judge is expected to re-sentence 19-year-old Carltez Taylor to decades in prison.
He and Javion Wilson were 17 when Taylor allegedly lured Wilson to a dark street and fatally shot him in November 2015. He was convicted of murder and sentenced last year.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports Chief Justice Loretta Rush and Justices Steven David and Christopher Goff agreed to reduce Taylor’s sentence. Rush wrote in the majority opinion that sentencing Taylor to life without parole removed his opportunities for rehabilitation.
Justices Geoffrey Slaughter and Mark Massa dissented, with Slaughter calling Wilson’s murder a “depraved and heinous crime.”
