Rep. Matt Gaetz said Wednesday that he would like to see Attorney General Jeff Sessions hold Hillary Clinton to the same level of scrutiny as President Trump.
“We have got to find out what’s going to be done to clean up the deep state that’s discrediting the rule of law in this country, giving special treatment to liberal Democrats like Hillary Clinton, and then having just this merciless prosecution of the president,” Mr. Gaetz, Florida Republican, said on Fox News.
Mr. Gaetz, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, has been a vocal advocate of looking into the investigation of Mrs. Clinton emails last year when she was running as the Democratic presidential nominee. In July, he proposed an amendment requesting documents from Mr. Sessions about the firing of former FBI Director James B. Comey and his role in clearing Mrs. Clinton of wrongdoing.
“We’d like to see the attorney general step up and apply the same standard of justice to Hillary Clinton that seems to be applied to the president,” Mr. Gaetz said.
He said that current FBI Director Christopher Wray is set to speak before the committee this week. Mr. Gaetz said he hopes Mr. Wray will be able to offer clarity surrounding a former FBI official, Peter Strzok, who was in charge of Mrs. Clinton’s email investigation and reportedly had anti-Trump leanings.
Mr. Strzok was dismissed from the special counsel investigation into Mr. Trump’s possible collusion with the Russian government due to his apparent biases.
