LIVERPOOL, England (AP) - Liverpool has reported Spartak Moscow to UEFA after one of its players was allegedly subjected to racial abuse during a youth-team game on Wednesday.
Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster was visibly angry and had to be restrained by teammates and coaching staff at the final whistle of the team’s 2-0 home win over Spartak in a UEFA Youth League match.
Liverpool says it has “followed the proper procedure by reporting the alleged incident to UEFA.” The English club did not say who was allegedly responsible for the racist abuse.
Spartak was punished with a partial ground closure for one match after its fans racially abused Brewster’s Liverpool teammate, Bobby Adekanye, during a game in the same competition in Moscow in September.
Anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out said Wednesday it was concerned that “yet another incident of racism has taken place involving a Russian club, particularly ahead of the 2018 World Cup” being hosted in Russia.
