Kellyanne Conway said Wednesday that President Trump and Mitt Romney have a good relationship, but she declined to say whether the president would support the former Massachusetts governor and GOP presidential nominee in a possible Senate run in Utah.
“They had a wonderful conversation, according to President Trump. They discussed among other things, what President Trump did the day before in Utah, with the national monuments and talking about historic tax cuts and the like,” Mrs. Conway, counselor to the president, said on CNN.
She said the president and Mr. Romney spoke late Tuesday, but did not say if Mr. Trump would support Mr. Romney in a possible Senate run. Mrs. Conway said that current Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch has not made a decision on his plans, and until then the president would not show support for another candidate.
Although Mr. Romney has not made a formal announcement of his plans, it’s been reported that he would step in should Mr. Hatch, a Republican who is 83 years old, decide to retire at the end of his term.
Mr. Trump and Mr. Romney have had a tense relationship at times. Mr. Romney gave a formal anti-Trump speech in the spring of 2016, calling Mr. Trump “a fraud.” Mr. Trump referred to Mr. Romney as a “choke artist” during the election, but considered him for the secretary of state position.
