MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s effort to collect unpaid sales taxes on purchases made out-of-state or online has taken in nearly $1 million.
Tax Commissioner Kaj (Kai) Samsom tells the Burlington Free Press that about 2,600 people sent in payment after receiving a letter from the state. He says about 18,000 letters were sent out as part of a campaign to remind people of the 6 percent use tax.
Republican Gov. Phil Scott was among those receiving a letter, but he said he made no out-of-state purchases and owed no tax. He criticized the letter as “a bit threatening.” He said the tax department should make it clearer that the letters are educational and not linked to an audit.
Taxpayers can track how much they owe or pay an estimated amount based on income.
