PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A man in his 70s is suing the Riddle School District in southern Oregon, claiming he wasn’t chosen to be coach of a girl’s high school basketball team because of age discrimination.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reported Monday the suit was filed on behalf of Jack. Ball in U.S. District Court in Eugene.

Ball, who grew up in Riddle, said he’s been coaching since 1962 and was 73 when he applied for the coaching job in October 2015.

Ball said he has significant more experience than the coach who was hired.

Riddle School District Superintendent Dave Giannoti says Ball has been a volunteer coach and that age was in no way a consideration in filling the job.

Ball is seeking $200,000 in economic damages and a court order that would compel the district to hire him as a coach.
