President Trump praised Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore Tuesday as a needed conservative vote for his agenda.
“I think he’s going to do very well,” Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House. “We don’t want to have a liberal Democrat in Alabama, believe me.”
Mr. Moore is facing off against Democrat Doug Jones in a Dec. 12 special election to fill the seat once held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
The president repeated his assertion that Mr. Jones would be a liberal puppet of Democratic leaders Sen. Charles Schumer of New York and Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California.
“We want to have the things we represent and we certainly don’t want to have a liberal Democrat that’s controlled by Nancy Pelosi, controlled by Chuck Schumer,” Mr. Trump said. “We don’t want to have that for Alabama.”
Mr. Moore, who has been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct dating back decades when several of them were teens, received the endorsement of the president on Monday. The Republican National Committee also reversed itself and began funneling money to his campaign again.
Republicans hold a 52-48 majority in the Senate, and still hope to approve a final tax-cut package before Christmas.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the president still finds the allegations against Mr. Moore “troubling.”
But she said Mr. Trump “would rather have a person who supports his agenda versus someone who opposes his agenda every step of the way.”
