ATLANTA (AP) - The city of Atlanta has completed its largest annexation in more than a half-century, absorbing Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Atlanta City Council’s 13-0 vote Monday adds 744 acres (301 hectares) to the city’s eastern edge and represents the most significant annexation since Buckhead’s addition in 1952.
The annexed areas will remain in DeKalb County but will become a part of Atlanta on Jan. 1. The move, deemed “historic and transformative” by Mayor Kasim Reed, brings 6,400 residents to the city.
Parents of DeKalb public school parents have objected to the council’s decision to include the area in Atlanta Public Schools, which will gain $2.25 million in property tax revenue despite fewer than 10 public school students living in the area.
