Rep. Ron DeSantis said Monday that Congress is prepared to hold members of the FBI and Justice Department in contempt for not complying with requests related to the Trump-Russia investigation.
“Devin Nunes has been trying to get this information from DOJ and the FBI for months and they’ve stonewalled every step of the way,” Mr. DeSantis, Florida Republican, said on Fox News.
Rep. Devin Nunes, California Republican, has been looking into certain aspects of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into whether President Trump colluded with the Russians. Mr. Nunes pointed to Peter Strzok, a top FBI official who was removed from the case last summer, and later found to have exchanged anti-Trump messages in emails with his mistress, who also worked as an FBI lawyer.
“The special counsel was not upfront about this. This happened months ago and just now this news is finally hitting,” Mr. DeSantis said.
Mr. Strzok also led the investigation into Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s emails during the presidential campaign after it was discovered she used a private server and personal device for her State Department emails.
Mr. Trump reacted to the news of Mr. Strzok’s removal on Saturday, tweeting he was “tainted” and that the whole investigation into Mrs. Clinton’s email case started to “make sense.”
Mr. DeSantis did say that Congress members cannot just threaten to hold officials in contempt, but that they actually need to follow through to get the information they need.
“They’ve shown a pattern of the last year saying we will comply and then the compliance isn’t quite 100 percent. It’s maybe half. We need to make sure we get all the information,” Mr. DeSantis said.
Tainted (no, very dishonest?) FBI “agent’s role in Clinton probe under review.” Led Clinton Email probe. @foxandfriends Clinton money going to wife of another FBI agent in charge.
