House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Monday that President Trump has shown a willingness to compromise on the tax bill.
“That’s showing how good this president is. He is actually showing that he’s going to get a deal done because he’s telling us I’ll be flexible, I just want to make this thing happen,” Mr. McCarthy, California Republican, said on Fox News.
Mr. McCarthy said that although Mr. Trump wanted the corporate rate at 20 percent, he indicated over the weekend that he would be willing to accept Congress’ compromise at 22 percent. Mr. McCarthy said he believes a similar compromise can be struck in conference between the House and Senate plans.
The Senate plan has a higher number of tax brackets than the House plan, but Mr. McCarthy said that depending on where the numbers are, he would be willing to accept more brackets.
“The most important thing is what that rate number is and where that income level is. So if I have to go for a higher number of brackets, but I got a lower rate, I think I could get there,” Mr. McCarthy explained.
Republicans still hope to have the differences solved and a bill on the president’s desk near their target date of Christmas.
