President Trump said Monday that the treatment of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn has been “very unfair,” in comparison to how the FBI treated rival Hillary Clinton.
“I feel badly for Gen. Flynn. I feel very badly. He’s led a very strong life,” Mr. Trump said to reporters outside the White House. “I will say this, Hillary Clinton lied many times to the FBI and nothing happened to her. Flynn lied, and they destroyed his life. I think it’s a shame.”
Mr. Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI in a deal to give full cooperation to special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating claims of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
“Hillary Clinton on the 4th of July weekend, went to the FBI, not under oath, it was the most incredible thing anyone has ever seen. She lied many times, nothing happened to her. Flynn lied, and it’s like, they ruined his life. It’s very unfair,” Mr. Trump explained before boarding Marine One.
The president also touched on a variety of other topics, including the stock market, which he said was reacting well to the Senate’s passing of the tax plan.
“And the only thing that hurts it is the fake news, and there’s plenty of that,” Mr. Trump said referring to ABC News’ report Friday that Mr. Trump had instructed Mr. Flynn to contact the Russians prior to him winning the election.
The report turned out to be incorrect, but the stock market saw significant drops after the report aired, then rebounded slowly throughout the afternoon.
The president heads to Utah Monday to give a speech that’s expected to address his decision to shrink Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments.
