DADE CITY, Fla. (AP) - A Florida police officer was struck and injured by a suspect in a stolen car, prompting another officer to fire shots at the car.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that Dade City Police Officer Kevin Burns was struck Saturday night by the driver of a Nissan Altima after a traffic stop. Authorities say it’s believed the Nissan’s driver was involved in a drug deal.

Officer Miguel Velez, who had arrived as backup, fired at the moving car and may have broken the car’s windows. It’s not known if the driver was hit or injured.

Early Sunday morning, Burns was in stable condition at a local hospital. Police say Velez has been placed on administrative leave.

The car was reported stolen in Tampa in early November.
