CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - Wyoming lawmakers are considering a bill that would simplify how speeding tickets are written and reduce the corresponding fines.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports the bill passed by the Joint Judiciary Committee last month would rewrite the state’s bond schedule, which currently consists of nine different speeding categories.

Each category that relates to the road type and location where the speeding driver is caught can currently have up to 40 different fine amounts.

The new system would keep in place the special fine amounts for school and construction zones with fines increasing based on speed.

The Legislative Services Office estimates the bill would cut school funding by about $1.5 million over two years as the money from speeding tickets is usually directed to county schools.
