DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - It was barely enough to notice, but a dusting of snow overnight means 2017 will rank as the second-latest year that Des Moines has recorded a measurable snowfall.
The Des Moines National Weather Service office says one-tenth of an inch of snow was recorded at midnight Thursday, making Dec. 21 the second-latest year for snow. The record for latest snowfall will remain Dec. 26, 1939, when the ground remained bare until 1.6 inches of snow on Dec. 26.
With two-tenths of an inch on Friday, Waterloo also recorded the second-latest snowfall. The latest snowfall in Waterloo remains Dec. 28, 1913.
Despite the light snowfall, Des Moines area residents shouldn’t expect a white Christmas, as there is only a slight chance for snow in the next several days.
