ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - Montgomery County residents won’t be able to prepay their 2018 property tax bills before a new federal tax overhaul kicks in.
The Washington Post reports that county officials dropped a plan to allow prepayment, saying it was unworkable on a tight timeframe.
Council member Roger Berliner pushed for the plan in response to new federal caps on deductions in Congress’ giant tax overhaul. Prepaying the property taxes could have been a major money saver for wealthy homeowners in the county, which is one of the richest in the country.
Officials neighboring Washington and Fairfax County said residents there could prepay as long as they act quickly.
