SENATOBIA, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi city has fired its assistant police chief and another veteran officer, or about 10 percent of the police force.

Senatobia Police Chief Steve Holts told The Associated Press on Thursday that he can only confirm that the Board of Aldermen fired Assistant Chief Robert Brownlee and drug education Officer Arthur Avant.

He says he now has about 18 officers.

WREG-TV reports that the board fired them during a closed-door session Tuesday, and none of the four aldermen would explain why. City Attorney David Slocum says all he can say is that the aldermen acted within the law.

Senatobia is a city of 8,200 in northeast Mississippi, about 30 miles south of Memphis, Tennessee.
