ASHBURN — Washington Redskins running back Samaje Perine tweaked his groin during a drill Thursday and sat out the rest of practice.

Perine was seen stretching after the drill and then slowly walked over to his teammates. Redskins coach Jay Gruden said they held him out as a precaution.

“I think it was a minor thing based on what I’m hearing,” Gruden said. “He still had some pretty good flexibility and movement.”

Perine, a rookie drafted in the fourth round out of Alabama, is the Redskins’ leading rusher this year with 547 yards. He became the Redskins’ main back after Rob Kelley suffered a season-ending ankle injury on Nov.14.

The Redskins have had many injuries this year at the running back position. Besides Kelley, running back Chris Thompson suffered a broken fibula against the New Orleans Saints on Nov. 19. Thompson’s replacement, Byron Marshall, was placed on injured reserve last week with a hamstring injury.

Perine, for the most part, has stayed healthy, playing in all 14 games. He popped up on the injury report at certain points with a hand and finger injury.

Brown sits again, Moses returns

Linebacker Zach Brown (Achilles, toe and hamstring) was held out of practice again for a second straight day after missing last week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Right tackle Morgan Moses (illness) returned. On Wednesday, Gruden said there was a case of the flu going around Redskins Park, causing Moses and defensive Stacy McGee to miss practice. McGee did not practice Thursday.

Wide receiver Maurice Harris was also held out with a back injury.
