GLENDORA, Calif. (AP) - Officials have held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the latest expansion of Los Angeles County’s growing light rail commuter system.
The event Saturday at Citrus College in Glendora celebrated the start of work on a $1.5 billion, 12.3-mile (19.8-kilometer) extension of the Metro Gold Line from Azusa in the eastern San Gabriel Valley to Montclair in western San Bernardino County.
The extension will have six stations.
Metro Rail currently has four light rail and two subway lines, with more than 100 miles of service and 93 stations.
Other big projects underway include a downtown Los Angeles connector to allow rides across the system without changing trains, a subway extension and a light rail line extension near Los Angeles International Airport that is expected to eventually link to an LAX people mover.
