Sen. Mark Warner said investigating President Trump’s financial ties could actually help remove the “cloud” hanging over him.
“Those are not areas where the congressional inquiry has spent a lot of time, because we’ve not established enough of a nexus. I believe and hope that Bob Mueller is looking into this,” Mr. Warner, Virginia Democrat and vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in an interview that aired on CNBC Tuesday. He was referring to special counsel Robert Mueller.
The senator said Deutsche Bank, which the president has done a lot of banking with, backs some of their loans with Russian money in “mirror trading.”
“Just from a plain counterintelligence standpoint, that would set off a lot of alarm bells because of the fear of potentially being compromised or having undue influence,” Mr. Warner said.
He added that, assuming Mr. Trump has done no wrongdoing, allowing Mr. Mueller to investigate this could help clear further suspicion surrounding the president’s ties to Russia.
Mr. Warner also predicted that both the congressional inquiry into Mr. Trump’s activities with Russia during the campaign and the special counsel’s investigation will both be completed by next year.
