The House Intelligence Committee grilled Andrew McCabe behind closed doors Tuesday, with Republicans angered by what they claim is the FBI deputy director’s obvious left-leaning political bias against President Trump.
“Andrew McCabe cuts across every facet of every investigation in 2016 … from [Hillary] Clinton’s emails to the investigation into the Trump campaign,” Rep. Trey Gowdy, South Carolina Republican and a committee member, told Fox News on Tuesday.
While few details emerged from the panel’s probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, Republican committee members were expected to focus on hundreds of text messages between an FBI counterintelligence agent and an FBI lawyer in which they call Mr. Trump an “idiot” and a “loathsome human” as he was running for president in 2016.
Veteran FBI counterintelligence agent, Peter Strzok, was removed from Mr. Mueller’s team over the summer after the discovery of the text messages he exchanged with Lisa Page, an FBI lawyer with whom he was having an extramarital affair. She had briefly been assigned to Mueller’s investigation.
But Republicans say the political bias Mr. McCabe represents extends across the FBI, Justice Department and Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.
“I’ll be a little bit surprised if [Mr. McCabe’s] still an employee of the FBI this time next week,” Mr. Gowdy recently told Fox News in a separate interview.
In a related development, members of the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday announced the panel will soon issue subpoenas for testimony from Mr. McCabe, Mr. Strzok, Ms. Page and Bruce Ohr, a DOJ official who allegedly met with creators of the notorious anti-Trump dossier.
