EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) - Officials say a pilot and two passengers were injured when a plane crashed into a parking lot near Gillespie Field airport in El Cajon.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the plane, a 1947 North American Navion, departed Gillespie shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday when the pilot radioed he was having engine trouble.
Officials say the plane hit a light pole as it was approaching the airport, and the aircraft ended up against a fence, where it burst into flames. The charred plane was left in pieces after the fire was extinguished.
Casey says the pilot and two passengers were taken to a trauma hospital. The extent of their injuries was unknown.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
