Republican Sen. Susan Collins says the tax reform overhaul now contains proposals she backed concerning state and local taxes, retirement savings and medical expenses.
The legislation would slash tax rates for big business and lower levies on the richest Americans. The GOP plans to muscle the $1.5 trillion bill through Congress this week before its year-end break.
Republicans on Friday gained needed support from Republican Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida and Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee. That could lessen the need for Collins’ vote.
Collins has said her vote will depend on whether Congress passes two bills she favors to stabilize the insurance market. She also wants lawmakers to ensure tax reform doesn’t trigger Medicare cuts.
Maine Democrats question Collins’ confidence in such fixes and point to House Republican resistance.
