MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s Democratic House Speaker says she doesn’t want to be associated with tweets from a party-run account that has accused a former GOP official of being “a racist and a serial liar.”

Speaker Mitzi Johnson tells the Burlington Free Press that she spoke to the head of the Vermont Democratic Party to express her disapproval.

The “VT House Dems” account called former state Republican party chairman David Sunderland a racist in a Dec. 10 tweet . In other posts, the account has described political opponents as “dumb” and “crybaby bigots.”

The state GOP has called on Democrats to disavow the tweets.

Conor Casey, executive director of the state Democratic Party, said “name-calling isn’t the way to go” but that there are bigger issues than Twitter.
