CONWAY, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina county has responded to a lawsuit by its treasurer complaining about a lack of staff.
Media outlets report Horry County says county treasurer Angie Jones has mishandled her duties. The county also says Jones has hired more people that the office previously had and some of them are her friends and political supporters.
Jones sued the county last month, saying the treasurer’s office has “historically” been understaffed, with just 13 employees to work in four offices. Jones pointed out her office processes more than 600,000 tax notices and $500 million in tax refunds annually.
Horry County’s response to the lawsuit also says Jones has exceeded her budget and caused the office to run a deficit. The county says Jones should be personally responsible for that deficit.
