ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) - Vermont police are looking for the person who broke into a collection box for the needy at a Catholic church.
Police say they believe the theft took place sometime between Wednesday and Thursday at the St. Johnsbury church. The Caledonian-Record reports the wooden box was broken in order for the suspect to gain access to the cash.
Father Curtis Miller says the money that is collected in the box is used to fund the church’s voucher program. Vouchers are given for various forms of assistance to people in need.
Miller says the exact amount of money stolen from the box is not known, but the church estimates it was likely around $20.
Miller says the person probably would have gotten more money if they had just asked the church.
