President Trump on Friday called on losing Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore of Alabama to concede the election.

“I would certainly say he should” concede, Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House. “He tried.”

Democrat Doug Jones pulled off a stunning victory Tuesday in Alabama’s special election for the seat formerly held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. But Mr. Moore has yet to concede, citing the closeness of the margin, which was more than one percentage point.

“I want to support who wins,” Mr. Trump said, adding that Republicans still “need the seat, we’d like to have the seat.”

Mr. Moore was the subject of sexual misconduct allegations by multiple women. The president endorsed him anyway, saying the GOP needed a reliable Republican vote for his agenda heading into next year.

When Mr. Jones is seated in January, Republicans will hold a 51-49 majority in the Senate.
