The White House said Thursday that President Trump “likes” Democrat Doug Jones, winner of a Senate seat in Alabama, and believes Republican Roy Moore should concede the election.

“He likes Doug Jones and looks forward to meeting him in person,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said of the president, who phoned Mr. Jones after his victory to congratulate him.

Mr. Trump endorsed Mr. Moore, saying he need the Republican’s vote in the Senate. Before Tuesday’s election, the president called Mr. Jones a “liberal” puppet of congressional Democratic leaders and predicted on Twitter that he would be “Pro-Abortion, weak on Crime, Military and Illegal Immigration, Bad for Gun Owners and Veterans and against the WALL.”

Mr. Moore, who was accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct, said Thursday he won’t concede the close election because ballots haven’t been certified yet.

Asked if the Republican should concede, Mrs. Sanders said, “the numbers reflect that and the president’s outreach [to Mr. Jones] shows that.”
