PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Supreme Court has ruled against a cement company that claims it was overtaxed hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The Providence Journal reports that Lehigh Cement filed a lawsuit against the Providence tax assessor in 2012 claiming it was improperly taxed on land it didn’t own. The company leases 3.65 acres of land in the city, but it says it was taxed on 16.8 acres of land.
Court documents show the company claims it paid $500,000 more than what was required between 2006 and 2009.
The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday the company allowed the statute of limitations to expire while it was trying to get compensation from the city.
Neither Lehigh nor representatives for Democratic Mayor Jorge Elorza responded to requests for comment.
