Ron Johnson hopes Alabama has taught Steve Bannon a lesson

Sen. Ron Johnson said Wednesday he hopes the results in Alabama taught Steve Bannon a lesson.

“I hope he pays attention that you need good candidates to win in Senate races,” Mr. Johnson, Wisconsin Republican, said to NBC News while walking between meetings on Capitol Hill.

Steve Bannon, former White House chief strategist and early backer of Roy Moore, rallied with him right until the eve of the election. Mr. Bannon has said he plans to run challengers against establishment candidates in next year’s midterm races.

Mr. Moore, the Republican candidate, lost Alabama’s senate race Tuesday night after weeks of allegations from women who claimed he pursued sexual relationships with them when they were teens. Mr. Moore denied these claims of misconduct, but many Republicans abandoned him, saying they found the allegations credible.

When asked if the results in Alabama had a larger message in national politics, Mr. Johnson responded: “Alabamians didn’t want somebody who dated 14-year-old girls.”
