ASHBURN — Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Wednesday that tight end Jordan Reed could need surgery on his left toe.

Reed was placed on injured reserve Tuesday after missing the last six games with a hamstring strain, but the tight end has been dealing with a fractured left toe since the offseason.

Reed tried to deal with the pain in various ways, seeing noted foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, receiving stem-cell treatment and wearing orthotics during the regular season.

The injury never fully healed, and Reed said his hamstring strain was caused by overcompensating with his right leg.

Now, Gruden said Reed will visit Dr. Anderson again in Charlotte.

“We’re going to try to get his toe fixed also and make sure his hamstring is better,” Gruden said.

Reed played a career-low six games this season, finishing with just 27 catches for 211 yards. He also missed Week 3 with a rib injury.

Josh Norman misses practice

Redskins cornerback Josh Norman sat out of practice Wednesday with a knee injury. Norman was seen doing work on a bike in the portion of practice open to media, and told reporters after he was fine.

Gruden said Norman hurt his knee Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Maybe a little wear and tear, too,” Gruden said. “I don’t think it’s anything serious. More of a rest day, so to speak. But he is a little sore.”

Also missing practice was linebacker Zach Brown (illness, toe, Achilles, hip), right tackle Morgan Moses (ankle), left tackle Trent Williams (knee) and safety Montae Nicholson (concussion).

Kicker Dustin Hopkins (hip) also practiced for the first time since being placed on injured reserve in October.
