ABC co-host Meghan McCain shared an emotional moment with former Vice President Joseph R. Biden on “The View” Monday morning after she broke down while discussing her father’s brain cancer diagnosis.
“I couldn’t get through your book, I tried,” Ms. McCain told the vice president as she started to tear up. “I think about Beau almost every day, and I was told, sorry, that this doesn’t get easier.”
Mr. Biden’s 46-year-old son, former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, died in 2015 of the same aggressive form of brain cancer that Republican Sen. John McCain was diagnosed with in July. The former vice president, a longtime friend of the senator’s, got up to sit next to Ms. McCain on the panel and assured her that there was still hope for her father.
“Beau talked about your dad’s courage. Not about illness, but about his courage,” he said.
Mr. Biden said medical science is advancing every day and that “hope” was going to get the McCain family through this troubled time.
“There is hope, and if anybody can make it, your dad [can]. Her dad is one of my best friends,” he told the audience. “We’re like two brothers who were somehow raised by different fathers or something.”
Mr. McCain tweeted a video of the exchange on Twitter and thanked the vice president for being a “source of strength.”
Thank you @JoeBiden & the entire Biden family for serving as an example & source of strength for my own family. https://t.co/qmmw5rjdUj
