Sen. Cory Gardner said Tuesday that he hopes Doug Jones, winner of the Alabama Senate race, will vote with the Republican majority.
“Tonight’s results are clear — the people of Alabama deemed Roy Moore unfit to serve in the U.S. Senate,” Mr. Gardner, who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said in a statement. “I hope Senator-elect Doug Jones will do the right thing and truly represent Alabama by choosing to vote with the Senate Republican Majority.”
The Colorado Republican refused to back Mr. Moore, the GOP candidate, in the Alabama Senate race after allegations of sexual misconduct with teenage girls became public. Mr. Jones’ surprising victory narrows the majority for Republicans in the Senate, but avoids the complication of seating a member many in the party have condemned.
Mr. Gardner said last week that Mr. Moore would “never have the support of the senatorial committee” and that they would not endorse him.
Mr. Moore was plagued by these allegations the last month of the campaign, despite categorically denying the claims.
