As the polls opened Tuesday in Alabama’s special election, President Trump urged voters to turn out for Republican Roy Moore in the hotly contested Senate race against Democrat Doug Jones.

“The people of Alabama will do the right thing. Doug Jones is Pro-Abortion, weak on Crime, Military and Illegal Immigration, Bad for Gun Owners and Veterans and against the WALL,” the president tweeted. “Jones is a Pelosi/Schumer Puppet. Roy Moore will always vote with us. VOTE ROY MOORE!”

Mr. Moore and Mr. Jones are locked in a tight race in the deeply conservative state that Mr. Trump carried in a landslide in November 2016.

Mr. Moore’s run was hobbled by accusations by several women that years ago when he was in his 30s, he pursued romantic relationships with teenage girls, including a woman who claims he attempting to initiate sex with her when she was 14 years old.

The controversy put the Southern state in play for Democrats and drew a flood of outside money and visits by to Democrats and celebrities to boost Mr. Jones.

Mr. Trump, who didn’t back Mr. Moore in the GOP primary, has increasingly thrown his support behind him in order to protect the Republicans’ narrow majority in the Senate.

The winner of Tuesday’s special election could cast a pivotal vote on the tax reform bill that Mr. Trump wants passed by Christmas.
