More than 20 faith leaders met Monday with President Trump and presented him with an award celebrating his support of religious communities and his historic move to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The U.S. recognition of Israel’s capital and plans to move the U.S. Embassy to the divided city set off protests among Palestinians but was hailed by supporters of Israel, including American evangelicals.

“Evangelicals are grateful for the fact that he has actually done what he campaign on,” said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council.

Mr. Trump promised during the campaign that he would move the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

The city is claimed by Israel as its capital. Palestinians also want the city as the capital of its future state.
