SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a pilot escaped serious injury when his small plane caught fire during an emergency landing at a California airport.

The plane took off Saturday afternoon from Sacramento Executive Airport but returned a short time later after the pilot experienced mechanical difficulties.

Laurie Slothower, a spokeswoman for the Sacramento County Department of Airports, says the aircraft caught fire during the landing.

The Sacramento Bee reports the pilot, who owned the private aircraft, sustained minor injuries and refused additional medical attention.

The fire was quickly extinguished. The incident is under investigation.
