PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine and New Hampshire dug out of the first significant snowfall of the season on Sunday, as most residents of the two states awoke to 4 to 8 inches of snow.

The National Weather Service said Saturday night’s snowfall topped out at 8 inches in Carrabassett Valley in Franklin County, Maine. Most areas of Maine and New Hampshire where snowfall was recorded were in the range of 3 to 6 inches.

New Hampshire’s highest recorded snow total was more than 7 inches in Greenland.

By midday on Sunday, many roads were clear, and downtown areas in cities such as Portland were hopping with Christmas shoppers. But more snow is in the forecast for northern New England on Tuesday.

Most of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont was under a “winter storm watch” advisory from the National Weather Service on Sunday afternoon. The Maine and New Hampshire coast were also under a small craft advisory.
