OPINION:
President Donald Trump tweeted that the trial of Jose Ines Garcia Zarate in the killing of Kate Steinle ended with a “disgraceful verdict.”
And he’s absolutely right. No matter the finding of the jury, it doesn’t change the fact Garcia Zarate never should have been in America in the first place — never should have been on the streets of San Francisco.
He tweeted: “A disgraceful verdict in the Kate Steinle case! No wonder the people of our Country are so angry will illegal immigration.”
That’s it, in a nutshell.
When American citizens can’t be safe in their own homes and streets because of illegals with criminal backgrounds who aren’t even supposed to be here — but who are, because of leftist-leaning amnesty and sanctuary policies — it’s sort of an outrage.
Americans of law-abiding minds tend to get upset.
Garcia Zarate had been deported five times. He was actually wanted by authorities for yet another deportation when he shot and killed Steinle as she walked down a pier in California with her father.
His attorneys said it was an accident — that he had found an item beneath the bench upon which he sat, that the item was wrapped in some sort of covering, that he reached to pick it up, that he discovered it was a gun, and that the gun then accidentally fired.
Steinle happened to be in the bullet’s path and died at the scene, his attorneys argued.
So jurors found him not guilty of murder and not guilty of manslaughter — though guilty of a gun charge.
But the point is this: Garcia Zarate shouldn’t have been in the streets of California that day. He shouldn’t have been in the United States.
As Attorney General Jeff Sessions noted in a statement he issued in the hours after the ruling, Garcia Zarate wouldn’t have been in San Francisco that fateful day had the city only honored a detainer issued on him by ICE.
“I urge the leaders of the nation’s communities to reflect on the outcome of this case and consider carefully the harm they are doing to their citizens by refusing to cooperate with federal law enforcement officers,” Sessions wrote.
Exactly.
When leftists open border doors, innocent Americans die. It’s as simple as that.
