NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Federal officials have cited a woman on weapons charges after her loaded baby blue handgun was allegedly discovered at a Virginia airport.
The Transportation Security Administration said in a statement on Wednesday that the gun was found in the woman’s carry-on bag at the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. The 9mm was loaded with five bullets.
The woman was catching an early morning flight. She said she forgot the gun was with her.
The TSA did not identify the woman but said she was from Camden, North Carolina.
The TSA said the typical first offense for bringing a gun through a checkpoint is $3,000. Airline passengers can travel with guns as long as they are declared at the check-in counter and packed in checked baggage, among other stipulations.
