RuPaul, the host of VH1’s Emmy-winning “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” told The Hollywood Reporter this week that President Trump has come to represent “the resistance to moving forward.”
The 56-year-old, whose televised drag queen competition is a hit, denounced Mr. Trump’s policy of banning transgender individuals from U.S. military service during an interview with THR, labeling Mr. Trump an obstacle to humanity’s psychological evolution.
“We live on a planet of polar opposites: black, white, male, female, gay, straight,” RuPaul said, THR reported Thursday. “So the pendulum swings. It swings. I think that the Trump administration has come to represent the resistance to moving forward. That’s what the code words ’make America great again’ are really saying. ’Let’s go back in time to when we didn’t have to evolve and that we could just languish in our ignorance.’”
RuPaul added that a ban on transgender military personnel is a result of the president’s inability to “empathize” with others.
“Yes, [Mr. Trump] could have come from a New York background where there are clubs, and different and open people, and all that — but that’s not what he was seeing. He was only seeing himself,” he said.
RuPaul said his show’s cultural influence is indicative of the world’s direction.
“’Drag Race’ has become a touchstone for young people who are really the future leaders — forward-thinking people who are going to lead our humankind into the next level of consciousness,” he said. “I know that sounds ’California woo-woo,’ but I really believe that.”
Season 9 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has received seven Emmy nominations. The show airs Fridays on VH1 at 8 p.m. EST.
