PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Officials say the Philadelphia school district owes $6.6 million to thousands of former employees, some of whom have been waiting years to be paid for unused leave time.
Controller Alan Butkovitz said Tuesday that his most recent audit found that more than 2,300 former teachers and staff members are owed money.
The district’s chief financial officer, Uri Monson, tells Philly.com (https://bit.ly/2vlUz3J ) the backlog is due to large staff reductions in past years. He says thousands of employees were let go, dramatically increasing the number of requests to be processed. At the same time, the number of employees processing those claims was cut in half.
Some workers still owed money left the district as long ago as 2001.
