OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Omaha’s mayor says she’ll reconvene a working group to devise another plan for paving the city’s substandard streets.
The City Council made no move at its meeting Tuesday to override Mayor Jean Stothert’s (STAH’-thurt’s) veto of a plan she originally proposed after its formulation by the working group. Several council members noted there weren’t enough sure votes for override to try.
Member Chris Jerram says the council probably will continue waiving city policy and agreeing to pay half the cost to upgrade individual streets where property owners have petitioned for an upgrade.
Earlier this year the mayor proposed formalizing that practice, but she vetoed the measure after the council amended it. Stothert says she and the council members have to “come up with a solution that we can agree on.”
