INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Authorities say an 11-year-old girl’s leg was amputated after she was struck by a freight train on the west side of Indianapolis.
The Wayne Township Fire Department says the girl was in critical condition after being struck about 2:50 p.m. Monday behind Garden City Elementary School, but she was communicating with rescuers as they took her to a hospital. Authorities haven’t said why she was on the tracks.
The fire department says an Indianapolis police officer and a family member were caring for the girl when other rescuers arrived. The officer’s efforts were credited with helping the girl survive. The child’s name wasn’t immediately released.
CSX railroad says the train was traveling from the Avon Yard in Indianapolis to Cincinnati when it struck the child. The railroad is assisting investigators.
