Andy Richter, a comedian and outspoken critic of Donald Trump, thinks he’s hit on the “greatest” way to troll the 45th president of the United States and it involves … giving the president’s golf club some business.
“The greatest troll would be to have your wedding at Bedminster and have the wedding party politely decline all Trump’s selfie offers,” Mr. Richter tweeted Tuesday morning, referring to the golf resort the president owns and wherein he is currently vacationing.
“.@SarahThyre let’s renew our vows in New Jersey,” he tweeted to wife Sarah Thyre, an actress and also an outspoken critic of Mr. Trump.
“I’m game,” replied Miss Thyre.
Mr. Richter seems to be inspired by news of the president crashing a wedding held at his Bedminster golf resort over the weekend. But judging by video posted online, the attendees were delighted by the presidential cameo.
Mr. Richter’s tweets spurred some followers to pipe in with suggestions of their own.
“When Donald drove up and asked how they were enjoying it ’We were having a blast until you showed up,’” said one.
Another suggested the wedding ceremony be conducted in Spanish.
But others observed that the joke would actually be on Mr. Richter.
“Here’s $100k but we won’t take pictures w you… jokes on trump?” quipped one Twitter follower.
It’s “[o]nly worth it if you somehow figure out a way to stiff the venue,” observed one follower. “Then only pay half the bill. Per Trump that’s perfectly ok,” quipped another, alluding to a history of allegations against Mr. Trump that he fails to fully live up to his contractual obligations.
A politically liberal celebrity who supported Hillary Clinton and has raised money for Planned Parenthood, Mr. Richter made waves in February by suggesting Mr. Trump was an “ideal” speaker to address CPAC because he was “racist” and employed “simplistic” rhetoric.
The longtime sidekick to late-night host Conan O’Brien also lectured Twitter users back in February that they should get used to his political pronouncements and not just expect him to crack apolitical jokes.
“[Y]ou endanger democracy, we take away your jokes,” said Mr. Richter in a February tweetstorm.
